Planting Instructions:
-
Seed Preparation: Hoya seeds are best sown fresh. If you have stored seeds, soak them in lukewarm water for 24 hours to enhance germination.
-
Timing: Start seeds indoors at any time of the year, as Hoyas thrive in controlled environments.
-
Soil Preparation: Use a well-draining, light soil mix. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss works well for Hoyas. Ensure the soil is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5-7.0).
-
Sowing Depth: Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and press them lightly to ensure good contact. Do not cover with soil as Hoya seeds require light to germinate. Mist the surface lightly with water.
Growing Conditions:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Temperature: Optimal growing temperatures range between 70-85°F (21-29°C). Hoyas do not tolerate cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
- Humidity: Hoyas prefer high humidity. Maintain a humid environment by using a humidity tray or misting the plants regularly.
Care Tips:
- Watering: Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly and ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
- Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding during the fall and winter.
- Pruning: Prune to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged leaves. Trim back long vines to encourage bushier growth.
- Support: Use a trellis or support for climbing varieties to encourage upward growth and display the beautiful flowers.
Pest and Disease Management:
- Pests: Hoyas can be susceptible to pests such as mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
- Diseases: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. Avoid overwatering to reduce the risk of root rot and leaf spot.
