Iris (Phalaenopsis) is a plant that likes warm and humid places. It does not need much soil or water, but it needs a lot of light and air. You can grow it in a pot or hang it from a basket. You can also put it near a window or on a balcony. But be careful not to let it get too hot or too cold.
Preparing for Germination
Prepare some agar medium in a glass jar. Agar medium is a jelly-like substance that has nutrients for the seeds. You can buy it from a garden store or make it yourself by mixing agar powder, water, sugar, and fertilizer.
Boil the mixture until it dissolves and pour it into a sterilized jar. Let it cool down and solidify.
Germinating the Seeds
Sprinkle some seeds on top of the agar medium. Do not put too many seeds or they will crowd each other. Cover the jar with a lid or plastic wrap and poke some holes for air exchange. Label the jar with the date.
Place the jar in a warm and bright place, but not in direct sunlight. Keep the jar moist by spraying some water every few days. Watch for signs of germination, such as tiny green shoots or roots coming out of the seeds. This may take up to 4 weeks.
Handling the Germinated Seeds
Transfer the germinated seeds to small pots with orchid bark or sphagnum moss. Be gentle and do not damage the delicate seedlings.
Caring for Your Orchid
Water them regularly and fertilize them once a month with orchid food. Give them enough light and air circulation, but protect them from strong wind or rain.
Enjoy your new Iris (Phalaenopsis) plants! They will grow bigger and stronger over time, and eventually bloom into beautiful flowers.
